Horse Pens is, without a doubt, the best boulderfield in the SouthEast. Halfway down to Birmingham from Chattanooga, you will find this field of acres and acres of boulders tightly packed together. The rock quality is often compared to Fontainebleu and for good reason. The solid, white sandstone is bullet hard, and uniquely shaped by wind and lots of water. You will find mostly slopers here with the occasional overhang. The weather is usually good, especially in the fall and winter. It is close to the interstate and there is camping right next to the boulders. Unfortunately, the world had only one season to get to know this amazing place before it was shut down. The owners went bankrupt and now the entire place is up for sale. We are all hoping that it will soon be resolved and climbing can continue. |
