down on the tail end of Lookout Mountain, just over the border into Georgia lies one of the biggest and best boulderfields in the Eastern united states with hundreds of acres of rock, free camping and Lost Wall just down the road (classic trad lines on sandstone cracks) Rocktown is aguably the most popular boulderfield in the South Classic area problems include: The Orb (V8 which moves out a series of open-handed slopers on the lip of a horizontal roof) Campus Punks (V6 exciting and high-ball slab action) Croc Block (a tall, slightly overhung vertical face with several V4-5 problems) The Scoop (V2 an amazing feature that finds you smearing in a smooth scooped-out bowl) Diamond in the Rough (V5 a great overhang with jugs and a toe-smearing topout) The Dugout (a section of overhanging rock with several problems utilizing the 4 foot roof at V5-8) Police Brutality (V2 an aptly named problem that starts on the biggest undercling and slaps up high to matching left and right slopers) The Comet boulder (a great formation with curious ribs running across its face and problems ranging from crimpy V5 to a V8 dyno!) Inspired by and Idiot Roof (V6 and pumpfest that will toss you off if you don't know how to control those swinging feet) Skin Graph (V6 a great problem that is crimpy and slopey at the same time...you will lose some skin for sure!) | |
Pictures Rocktown is open year-round and has free camping right around the parking lot. A rough, dirt road leads to the lot, so bring your 4x4 or a rugged car. The rocks usually dry slowly, and if it is raining anywhere in the tri-state area, it is probably raining at Rocktown. Bring a pad, or two, even though many of the problems are low enough to not need one. There is no guide (except for a short one in a past edition of Climbing magazine) so just go and ask someone for a tour or to point you towards the nearest classic. |
